Consultation vs. Supervision

Charlton Hall, MMFT, PhD offers consultation, not supervision. Supervision is a formal arrangement for therapists to discuss their work regularly with someone who is experienced in both therapy and supervision. The task is to work together to ensure and develop the efficacy of the therapist/client relationship. The agenda will be the therapy and feelings about that work, together with the supervisor’s reactions, comments, and challenges. Thus supervision is a process to maintain adequate standards of therapy and a method of consultancy to widen the horizons of an experienced practitioner.

Consultation, on the other hand, involves advice and discussion regarding a particular topic or topics. Therapeutic consultation provides expertise, training, and technical assistance in any of the specialty areas listed above to mental health caregivers and other service providers in supporting their clients.

During a consultation, the specifics of individual cases are not discussed, as that lies within the realm of supervision, not consultation. During consultation, we discuss general tools, techniques, and trends and what the research says about applying a particular type of therapeutic intervention.

Dr. Hall consults on the topics outlined above. To book a consultation via Zoom, please complete the form below.
