FAQs about Telehealth/Teletherapy

How does Telehealth/Teletherapy work?
You will need a device capable of live video and/or audio streaming such as a smart phone, tablet, or laptop. You will first complete an intake form which asks questions about your health history and reasons for seeking therapy. When this form is completed you will be asked to schedule an appointment through our online client portal. The video teleconferencing platform is HIPAA compliant, and allows you and your therapist to access video and audio conferencing for online sessions, a scheduling calendar, a HIPAA compliant messaging system, and online progress monitoring and therapy tools.

What type of people would benefit most from teletherapy?
Teletherapy is typically done with people who are not currently in crisis. Examples of people who might not be suitable for online therapy would be those who have a current or recent suicide attempt or suicide plan, or those who might be a danger to themselves or to others. Online therapy has been successfully used to treat a variety of diagnoses, from anxiety and depression to trauma, addiction, and family difficulties. People who have scheduling difficulties or who have transportation issues also find telehealth/teletherapy a convenient alternative to having to schedule an office appointment and travel to the therapist’s office.

I’m not currently in a crisis, but what if a crisis develops during my treatment?
During your first appointment you and your therapist will create a crisis plan should you ever need it. This crisis plan includes a list of crisis resources in your area, a plan for support and access to crisis care, and a personalized list of steps that you and your therapist may use to help determine the best course of action for you should a crisis develop.

Is online therapy really as good as in-person?
The Mindful Ecotherapy Center and Charlton Hall always prioritize the interaction and relationship between patients and therapists. Typically there is increased engagement with Telehealth/Teletherapy with patients under 30 since this generation has grown up with technology and are comfortable with it. The activities are no different than what the therapist would be doing with the patient in a traditional office setting. The therapist and student can always see each other live onscreen regardless of what activities they are doing. Teletherapy has the added benefits of keeping any worksheets, training videos, messaging and handouts in one convenient online location for easy access.

How do I know the Teletherapist will be a good fit for my needs?
Teletherapists with the Mindful Ecotherapy Center are highly talented professionals who are hand-selected and highly vetted for your unique needs. We practice a person-centered approach, meaning that we work on what you want to work on. Your goals and objectives come first. If what we’re doing doesn’t seem to be working for you, please let your therapist know and we will try a different approach. This also means that if, after a few sessions, you feel your therapist isn’t a good fit or that online therapy isn’t for you, we will be happy to refer you to another agency.

What is the cost of Teletherapy and does my insurance pay?
The sessions are priced affordably with the convenience of paying online using your credit card or your Health Savings Account card. Check with your insurance network to determine the details of your policy. Since I am an out-of-network provider, you pay directly to my online office and file for reimbursement from your insurance company with the “Superbill” receipt which I can provide to you. Superbills are routinely sent out on a monthly basis automatically. Please note that it is your responsibility to check with your insurance company to see if they will reimburse for telehealth/teletherapy services prior to beginning sessions. Any amount not reimbursed by your insurance company is your responsibility.

How do I get started and what is required?
You will contact me for your first appointment using the contact form below and I will send you a link to fill in electronic forms, log in to the Mindful Ecotherapy Center’s online appointment scheduling tool, and online video conferencing portal. This portal is a HIPAA compliant video platform. You will begin teletherapy as soon as we agree on a mutually compatible time for our first meeting. You can use whichever device (desktop or laptop computer, phone, tablet with video camera) is most convenient for you and will have an opportunity to conduct a test for sound and video quality prior to the session. It is recommended that you select a place that is private, where you will not be disturbed, and use headphones for privacy. It is a good idea to take notes and be prepared to keep to keep track of your goals and progress. The teletherapy portal will also give you access to a variety of online worksheets, videos, and other materials custom-made for your particular goals and objectives.

What makes telehealth/teletherapy with the Mindful Ecotherapy Center unique?
The Mindful Ecotherapy Center has been offering therapy based on mindfulness and ecotherapy since 2008. While therapy sessions are online, we also give our patients and clients a variety of experiential exercises they may complete on their own at home. These range from guided meditation recordings to video instruction on ecotherapy techniques you may practice on your own in natural settings. Our Mindulness-Based Ecotherapy programs have helped hundreds of people to attain happier and healthier lives.

Transgender and LGBTQ+ Services Online
The Mindful Ecotherapy Center has been an advocate for LGBTQ+ rights since its founding in 2008. With the addition of teletherapy, we are expanding our advocacy in Florida and South Carolina.
While therapists are trained to be advocates for the rights of all who come under their care, few have the specialized qualifications necessary to help the LGBTQ+ population. Charlton Hall, MMFT, LMFT/S, RPT-S, CHt has been working with LGBTQ+ issues since the founding of the Mindful Ecotherapy Center, with a special emphasis on transgender care and transgender rights.
Per guidelines established by the World Professional Association for Transgender Health, an assessment by a mental health professional and a letter of recommendation from a qualified therapist are necessary prior to beginning hormone therapy. The Mindful Ecotherapy Center is now offering these assessment services online to residents of Florida and South Carolina. This assessment and recommendation can usually be accomplished in one or two sessions if further treatment isn’t indicated. To learn more about these services or for any questions, please contact us.
